Preserve The Beauty

Of Your Lithos Creation

Thoughtfully crafted for lasting presence, your Lithos piece is built to endure. When you purchase homeware from us, our hope is that it becomes a cherished part of your space — both functional and timeless. To help preserve its form and finish, please follow the care guidelines below:

General Care & Handling

  • Clean Gently: Wipe down the surface with a soft, damp cloth to remove dust and debris, and dry thoroughly. Apply gentle movements to avoid scratching the surface of the product.
  • Handle With Care: Always handle with gentle precision when cleaning or moving your pieces. Though durable, rough handling can lead to chips or hairline cracks, compromising its pristine finish. Treating your piece with care will help it remain in flawless condition for years to come.
  • Avoid Harsh Chemicals: Steer clear of bleach, alcohol-based cleaners, or any abrasive products that can damage the sealant or degrade the surface or finish. For light stains, use mild soap and warm water.
  • Store Properly: When not in use, store your pieces in a safe and dry environment away from heat and moisture.

Water & Heat Protection

  • Avoid Soaking: Do not submerge or soak in water, as it may weaken the material over time.
  • Wipe Away Spills Immediately: Be proactive and wipe up spillages as soon as possible to prevent stains. Although we have added a protective layer of sealant to limit stains, prolonged exposure to moisture may affect the finish and lead to water marks.
  • Avoid Excess Water: All Lithos creations are meticulously sealed with a high-quality, water and heat resistant acrylic sealer. This ensures they are splash-proof and safe for use in environments like kitchens and bathrooms. However, since the material we use is porous by nature, to maintain its strength, it's crucial to avoid prolonged exposure to excessive moisture which may lead to surface marks or deterioration over time.
  • No Direct Heat Contact: Our pieces are heat and UV-resistant, and can withstand everyday temperature fluctuations. However, for lasting integrity and to prevent damage, protect them and keep away from extreme heat sources. Avoid direct contact with radiators, stovetops, open flames or fireplaces. Prolonged exposure to direct sunlight should also be avoided. High temperatures and extended heat can damage the protective sealant, leading to discolouration or warping. Please note that our pieces (specifically coasters) are safe for holding hot drinks.

Impact & Surface Protection

  • Avoid Impact To Prevent Breakage: While resilient, our products are not shatterproof. Protect your piece from strong impacts and drops as these can cause significant damage or weaken the material's integrity over time.
  • Prevent Surface Marks: While our pieces are crafted for everyday use, their surfaces can be scratched by sharp or abrasive items. Avoid dragging heavy or pointed objects across them, and take care when cleaning or styling to preserve their smooth, tactile finish.

Intended Use & Specific Product Care

  • Keep Indoors: Although sealed with a protective coating, which gives the material a durable resistant protection, prolonged exposure to outdoor elements, such as sunlight or rain/moisture, may cause wear and discolouration or affect the durability of the material.
  • Not Food-Safe: Our pieces are strictly decorative and not intended for serving food. Although our medium is water-based, non-toxic, solvent free and contains no VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds), it's important to note that it is not certified as food-safe. We strongly discourage its use for direct contact with food, as using them for food-related applications can pose potential risks.
  • Not dishwasher or microwave safe: Please do not place your Lithos pieces in the dishwasher or microwave, as this may damage the material and its protective finish.

Tealight & Incense Holders

Your Lithos holders are designed to beautifully complement your candles and incense. While our material is heat and flame-resistant, discolouration and staining may occur when used in conjunction with decorative candles and incense.

For Tealight Holders:

Always place your tealight holder on a heat-resistant surface (such as a trivet or plate) to protect the surface beneath. As mentioned previously, note some discoloration on the surface is to be expected over time with the regular use due to direct heat exposure.

For Incense Holders:

Promptly clean any ash after use, once it has cooled down. Gently dust away residue with a soft, dry cloth to prevent staining or buildup. Avoid using wet cloths or cleaning products directly on ash-covered areas, as moisture may cause discoloration.

Please note that although our material is sealed, prolonged contact with ash, particularly from darker or resin-based incenses, can cause discoloration or staining over time.

Using Trays With Candles

Your Lithos trays provide an elegant base for your decorative arrangements, including candles. To ensure their lasting beauty and prevent marks:

Guard Against Heat Marks:

Although our material is heat-resistant, prolonged or direct heat from a candle's base or very low-burning flame can cause discoloration or scorch marks on the tray's surface. For candles with individual holders we recommend extinguishing and removing the candle when approximately 5–10mm of wax remains.

For free-standing candles we recommend placing a small coaster or heat-resistant barrier between the candle and the tray to provide an extra layer of protection. Please note that melted wax may pool as the candle burns. Due to the oily nature of wax, this can lead to surface staining, especially if left for extended periods.

To help minimise marks, extinguish candles before they burn too low (around 5–10mm of wax remaining), and avoid allowing hot wax to sit on the tray for too long.

Wax residue:

After burning a candle, there may be wax residue left on the tray. To remove this, simply wait until the wax has cooled and hardened. Then use a spatula to gently lift any residue without scraping. If there is any stubborn residue, you can use a cloth dampened with warm soapy water to remove it. Avoid using sharp tools to maintain the surface integrity.

Maintenance and Long-Term Care

Additional Protection:

To maintain optimal protection and finish, we recommend reapplying a suitable sealant over time as it may wear down. This will provide an extra layer of protection from stains, discolouration, moisture and heat. Always test the sealant on a small, inconspicuous area first to ensure compatibility.

It's important to be mindful of the material we use due to it's porous nature and it's susceptibility to water absorption, especially for items like coasters that are likely to encounter moisture regularly. Applying a sealant to such products is not only necessary but also crucial to their longevity and functionality.

Types Of Sealants:

It is advised to use a water-based acrylic sealant every 6–10 years, or a stone-safe wax every 6–12 months, to refresh the surface and preserve its durability and appearance. At Lithos, all our creations have been treated with an acrylic sealer.

In conclusion, caring for your pieces is an investment in their enduring beauty and longevity. By diligently adhering to these simple guidelines, you can ensure that your Lithos creations not only retain their original charm but continue to adorn your space with elegance and style for years to come. Thank you for choosing the craftsmanship of Lithos — we love knowing our creations find a unique place in your home.
